Susan Molenda is the Vice President Marketing at Nestle Purina Petcare. She has over 33 years of experience in the food industry, most notably the past 29 years at Nestle Purina Petcare. Holding a Bachelor degree in Food, Nutrition and Family Studies from Ryerson University, she crafted her career around helping improve the lives of people and pets.

Susan will share her career journey, starting fresh out of University in an entrepreneurial role and her evolution within Nestle Purina where she leveraged cross-functional opportunities for growth and development. She has overseen many new pet product innovations, packaging projects, research studies, strategic plans as well as the production of advertisements with the most adorable puppies and kittens.

Some of her career highlights include the development of a Pet Experience Centre at the Toronto Harbourfront, a Crisis Team lead during the closure of the border that blocked imports of pet food between Canada and the US, and the successful transition of unique Canadian brands to Global brands. She has also been an ambassador and spokesperson for the Purina Animal Hall of Fame, which just celebrated its 50th year in 2018.

Throughout her career, Susan has seen a dramatic shift in gender equality, and has held a seat on the Purina Leadership board for the past 18 years. She is proud of the female representation at all levels across the company today, and was one of the first women to begin to break through the gender gap. Today, she manages a diverse team of seasoned professionals whose skill sets include brand management, digital, ecommerce, consumer services and market research.

Susan is a single mother to three wonderful children. Her children are building their own careers in marketing, nutrition and entrepreneurial endeavors. They too – quote their mother’s mantra of “Trust and Surrender” and other bits of “Mom” wisdom.

  • Eden is a United Way of Peel supported organization and Purina has been proudly supporting the United Way for decades.
  • Since the beginning of our partnership with United Way, we have donated over $1 million. Through these donations we have sponsored Eden, and many other organizations that benefit from the support of the United Way.
  • Coincidentally, at a grassroots level, one of our employees has been a volunteer at Eden on her personal time for many years. This employee and her family have proudly promoted the good work Eden does, and Purina has a strengthened our commitment to Eden.
  • During our first annual #PurinaCares week, we encouraged employees to get out into the community and give back—so we set up a learning kitchen activity at Eden for our employees. In three hours, 25 employees prepared hundreds of meals to be distributed to Eden’s clients.
  • As an organization that has deep roots in Mississauga, our corporate head office and factory is located in Clarkson and has been for 33 years, we are so proud to contribute to a community that we know and love. Not only do our employees work in this community, but many of us live here too.

A registered not-for-profit charity, Eden Food for Change has been serving the people of western Mississauga who struggle with food insecurity since 1989

They provide a safe and caring environment where people can access fresh and healthy food, develop sustainable skills, and receive one-on-one advocacy support. Over 400 hundred families use its food bank every month; nearly 40% are children. Over half of the 425,000 pounds of food they distribute is fresh. The true, personalized grocery shopping experience allows people to make the food choices that best meet their nutritional, dietary, health, and cultural needs.

The Learning Kitchen is one of its most important platforms. Free cooking classes are available to those who use the food bank. In conjunction with Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services, they deliver Food Handling Certification Courses for refugees to learn skills to obtain employment in the food industry. They prepare lunches for the Living Arts Centre’s summer camp for students impacted by socio-economic factors, and employ students from this same community. In 2017, the community and corporate group cooking classes produced 32,000 fresh meals for the food bank. The weekly Fresh Produce Box serves all of Mississauga, promoting even higher levels of inclusion and access to affordable fresh fruit and vegetables.

The need for food is what brings people to Eden Food for Change, but meeting this need is only the first step. Creating wrap-around, multi-level programs that support vulnerable groups in the community continues to be their driving force.
